The Eagles have one of the worst secondaries in the league.
Despite the team pulling off a 34-27 victory over the Green Bay Packers this past Thursday night, the secondary once again struggled.
Packers wide receiver Davante Adams had a monstrous night, garnering 106 of his 180 receiving yards in the first quarter. If Adams didn’t leave the game due to a toe injury, then the Packers probably would have won the game.
The secondary, notably Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones, struggled in coverage while the team’s secondary also took on more injuries.
Jones left the game with a hamstring injury while Avonte Maddox got a concussion as he took a vicious shot to the head from teammate Andrew Sendejo. With Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, and Cre’Von LeBlanc also out for a while, the Eagles are seriously lacking depth at the cornerback position and will need to address this problem before considering themselves Super Bowl contenders.
The Eagles made a smart move by signing veteran corner Orlando Scandrick. He may be aging and it’s possible that he is washed up, but Scandrick is the most reliable corner available on the free agent market.
Because of his aging status, Scandrick alone won’t solve the problems of the Eagles secondary. The team needs to go out and trade for a true shut down corner.
Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey is the guy that has recently been propped up in Eagles trade rumors. Ramsey notably wants out of Jacksonville and the Eagles have reportedly been in trade discussions for the 2-time Pro Bowler.
Getting Ramsey would be huge. Scandrick could be a nice compliment to him and the duo combined with the resurgence of the Eagles pass rush would make it harder for opposing offenses to walk all over the defense like they are right now.
The return of LeBlanc and Darby from injury could truly make the Eagles secondary a lot better. Imagine the great defense that the Eagles secondary could display with a squad consisting of Jalen Ramsey, Orlando Scandrick, Ronald Darby, and Cre’Von LeBlanc.
Regardless of who the Eagles acquire, the Eagles need to improve amp up their secondary if they want to make it back to the Super Bowl.
